What causes headaches?

In my experience a few things causes most headaches. Here are the 10 most common causes:

  1. Food allergies- a simple food allergy like milk or corn or garlic can trigger migraine headaches hours to even a day later.
  2. Yeast or parasite infections- these infections usually live in the digestive system. But they produce toxins that can get absorbed into the bloodstream. Then these toxins can trigger headaches.
  3. Toxins- mercury toxicity and lead and others can affect the brain and cause headaches.
  4. Neck- a tight neck can cause headaches. In that case a massage and chiropractic care can help relieve these types of headaches.
  5. Air allergies- an allergy to ragweed or mountain cedar (common in the Texas area) can sometimes trigger headaches. Most often sinus or frontal headaches.
  6. Gallbladder or liver headaches- these are most often on the right side of the head...the gallbladder and liver are also on the right side of the body.
  7. Hormone imbalances- most of the time hormone imbalances are from the thyroid as the primary trouble-maker. Correct the thyroid and hormones balance and headaches disappear.
  8. Psychosomatic- this means your thoughts, worries, and psyche are causing the headache. In that case some work on your emotions or beliefs about your life or traumatic events can help stop the headaches coming from emotional stresses.
  9. The mouth- sometimes if the teeth are not in alignment then when you bite, it produces extra stress on your jaw joint (the TMJ). A dentist can help to adjust your bite.
  10. The bones in your head- the skull has a lot of bones that are melded together but that move slightly. When you fall and hit your head or have an accident it can lock up the bones in the head and they no longer move correctly. Although subtle, if the bone movement stops, headaches can follow. This would be addressed by someone trained in cranio-sacral therapy. They can adjust the bones and allow them to start moving again.

I hope this was helpful. If you know someone who has regular headaches, share this information with them. I am here to help if they need good testing for what is causing the headaches. Sincerely, Dr. Cone 972-880-8541
